Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminum. The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. I look for the opportunity to shoot a silhouette whenever possible. By exposing for the bright background, these equestrian riders create a silhouette, and are also framed by the barn doors.
I found this one at the Oregon State Fair in Salem, Oregon.
